Senior Geotechnical Engineer - Site TCLW - Climax Mine - Leadville, CO

This position is located at the Climax Mine site off of CO-91 between Silverthorne, CO and Leadville, CO. This is a rural, alpine area approximately two hours from the Denver metropolitan area. The mine is at an altitude of approximately 10,200 feet. In the winter, the average high temperature is 31 degrees and the average low is 3 degrees. In the summer, the average high temperature is 71 degrees and the average low is 38 degrees. The average snowfall in Lake/Chafee counties is in excess of 200 inches per year.
Under general supervision, provide professional Geotechnical Engineering support, leadership, analysis and review related to design, construction, and operation of overall slope stability of Crushed Ore Leach Stockpiles (CLSs), Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs), Water Dams (WDs), and their foundations. Serve as resource for Geotechnical information and analysis in these fields.
Supervise, guide and participate in activities to maintain performance of tailings, crushed leach, and water dam facilities through inspection, measurement, data management, interpretation, analysis, coordination, problem solving and reporting
Apply and improve performance of tailings, crushed leach and water management systems and associated procedures for assigned active and inactive facilities
Oversee construction Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) activities for TSFs, CLSs, and WDs
Collaborate with operators, engineers and maintenance to continuously ensure good performance of tailings, crushed leach and water management areas and to identify and implement associated improvements including the mine, process, tailings, water, environmental and safety areas
Engage the Engineer of Record in the design and operations of TCLW facilities
Communicate accurate, timely and relevant geotechnical information to Operational management team
Serve as point of contact with Corporate engineers and management, including tracking all recommendations, ensuring compliance with those recommendations, and reporting actions regularly
Work on multiple projects of moderate size or portions of major projects
Contribute to annual operational and sustaining capital budget preparation by supplying costs and recommendations
Assist with the development, maintenance and implementations of strategic plans and sustaining capital forecasts for five-year and life of mine plans for to assigned TSFs, CLSs, and WDs
Manage appropriate budgets for consulting and other services such as drilling and construction contractors
Lead and mentor lower level engineers and contractors in key practice areas
Review designs in key practice areas and understand interaction with other functional areas/disciplines
Apply relevant standards and guidelines
Actively support operation's water team and engineers with analysis of material properties, water loss parameters, and operational changes for TSFs, CLSs, and WDs
May represent the site on company sponsored steering teams related to geotechnical efforts
Perform other duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related Engineering discipline from an accredited curriculum, with courses in Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering and five (5) years of experience in an applicable field of expertise; OR
Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering or related Engineering discipline from an accredited curriculum, with courses in Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering and three (3) years of experience in an applicable field of expertise
Engineer in Training (EIT) or equivalent relevant certification
Knowledge in the principles and practices of Civil, Geologic, Geotechnical, or Hydrologic Engineering or a related field of Science or Engineering
Able to demonstrate technical competence through design and/or operations experience in at least one of the following work areas: tailings storage, leach stockpiles, water dams, process water balance
Knowledge of appropriate software (MS Office, AutoCAD) and Geotechnical data analysis
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing to a diversely educated audience
Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety of yourself and others
Preferred
Master's degree in a related Engineering discipline
Professional Engineer (PE) Certification
Active tailings deposition experience including planning and execution process and/or earth embankment construction monitoring and quality assurance
Experience with geotechnical slope stability instrumentation and monitoring programs, data management, and analysis
Experience reviewing and editing geotechnical engineering reports and documents for a variety of applications
Engineering experience in geotechnical analyses including field investigations, lab testing, soil characterization, slope stability, seismic analysis
Experience in surface water hydrology, hydraulics, and groundwater hydrology in addition to geotechnical experience

Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment
Work is in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity and work on elevated platforms
Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 30 pounds) during the course of the workday
Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required
